KEY CHAPTERS, AND WHY THEY ARE KEY

Chapter 2 - Setting LOTS about the scenes and key characters (including the bit where the soldiers racially abuse Hassan:

Great for:
SETTING, TIME/CONTEXT, CHARACTERS, LOVE, RELATIONSHIPS, PROTAGONISTS, ANTAGONISTS,
SPEECH, EMOTIONS, VIEWPOINTS/PERSPECTIVES, IMAGERY, MINOR CHARACTERS.

Chapter 3 - Really summarises and introduces the relationship between Baba and Amir. Again, very important!

Great for:
SETTING, TIME/CONTEXT, CHARACTERS, LOVE, RELATIONSHIPS, PROTAGONISTS, ANTAGONISTS,
SPEECH, EMOTIONS, VIEWPOINTS/PERSPECTIVES, IMAGERY, MINOR CHARACTERS.

Chapter 5 - The run-in with Assef and the outbreak of war. All VERY important:

Great for:
SETTING, TIME/CONTEXT, CHARACTERS, LOVE, CONFLICT, RELATIONSHIPS, PROTAGONISTS, ANTAGONISTS,
SPEECH, CLIMAXES/ANTICLIMAXES, EMOTIONS, VIEWPOINTS/PERSPECTIVES, IMAGERY, MINOR CHARACTERS.

Chapter 7 - THE MOST IMPORTANT CHAPTER IN THE ENTIRE NOVEL!!! (Remember that before this, in chapter 6, Amir asks Hassan 'Would you ever lie to me?' and Hassan replies 'I'd rather eat dirt.') This chapter is about the kite fight, leading on to the rape scene.

Great for: (Pretty much everything!!)
SETTING, TIME/CONTEXT, CHARACTERS, LOVE, CONFLICT, RELATIONSHIPS, PROTAGONISTS, ANTAGONISTS,
SPEECH, CLIMAXES/ANTICLIMAXES, EMOTIONS, VIEWPOINTS/PERSPECTIVES, IMAGERY, MINOR CHARACTERS.

Chapter 8 - The party. FULL OF SYMBOLISM/RELATIONSHIPS etc Look also at Ch 9 where Ali/Hassan leave in the rain.

Great for:
SETTING, TIME/CONTEXT, CHARACTERS, LOVE, CONFLICT, RELATIONSHIPS, PROTAGONISTS, ANTAGONISTS,
SPEECH, CLIMAXES/ANTICLIMAXES, EMOTIONS, VIEWPOINTS/PERSPECTIVES, IMAGERY, MINOR CHARACTERS.

Chapter 10 - The truck ride out of Afghan (Senses/smells/emotions/feelings/time frame has moved on etc)

Great for:
SETTING, TIME/CONTEXT, CHARACTERS, LOVE, CONFLICT, RELATIONSHIPS, PROTAGONISTS, ANTAGONISTS,
SPEECH, CLIMAXES/ANTICLIMAXES, EMOTIONS, VIEWPOINTS/PERSPECTIVES, IMAGERY, MINOR CHARACTERS.

Chapter 12 - The Pashtun market place in California. Really good for characterisation of Afghan people, relationships and Baba's change in character.

Chapter 13, Baba dies - Obviously some key stuff, but probably not THE most important chapter.

Chapter 16 - The story of Hassan told from the POV of Rahim Khan <--- Very important if asked about narrative techniques/point of view etc.

Chapter 19 - Amir goes back to Afghan, helped by Wahid. Wahid does not like him at first and tells him he was 'alwats a forgeigner'. Awkward moment where Amir gives Wahid's kids his watch, but really they want his food. A great chapter for...

SETTING, TIME/CONTEXT, CHARACTERS, LOVE, CONFLICT, RELATIONSHIPS, PROTAGONISTS, ANTAGONISTS,
SPEECH, CLIMAXES/ANTICLIMAXES, EMOTIONS, VIEWPOINTS/PERSPECTIVES, IMAGERY, MINOR CHARACTERS.

Chapter 21 - The HORRIBLE BITS start. This is the chapter where they go to the football stadium to watch a match and end up witnessing a public execution by the Taliban. Amir arranges a meeting with 'the Cleric who looks like John Lennon' (Assef) for later in the day.

SETTING, TIME/CONTEXT, CHARACTERS, LOVE, CONFLICT, RELATIONSHIPS, PROTAGONISTS, ANTAGONISTS,
SPEECH, CLIMAXES/ANTICLIMAXES, EMOTIONS, VIEWPOINTS/PERSPECTIVES, IMAGERY, MINOR CHARACTERS.

Chapter 22 - The HORRIBLE BITS continue. This is the scene of the fight between Amir and Asseff

SETTING, TIME/CONTEXT, CHARACTERS, LOVE, CONFLICT, RELATIONSHIPS, PROTAGONISTS, ANTAGONISTS,
SPEECH, CLIMAXES/ANTICLIMAXES, EMOTIONS, VIEWPOINTS/PERSPECTIVES, IMAGERY, MINOR CHARACTERS

Chapter 23 - Amir moves in and out of consciousness - great for unusual narrative techniques.

Then, just look at the closing of the novel. The image of the Kites, and how FULL of imagery the last few pages are.

Hope this helps,

NW
